{ QUICK & EASY INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING }
- A COFFEE FILTER FLOWER ARRANGEMENT -
MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED: Paper Plates, Brushes, Hair Dryer, Coffee Filters, Large wide Straws, Hot Glue gun and plenty of glue sticks, Plastic trays or plastic plates, Green Floral Tape, Metal Hair Clips, white Styrofoam Cups, medium peach Acrylic Paint, Brown paper grass or Brown tissue paper. Long Green silk leaves, round green silk leaves, twine for a makeshift clothesline, spray bottle filled with water.
INSTRUCTIONS: In order to make your coffee filter flowers you will need to use THREE filters for each flower. TWO are painted filters and ONE is a plain filter. If your making TWO flowers as shown in the arrangement above, you will need to have the seniors paint FOUR coffee filters, and combine two painted filters with ONE plain filter for each flower. After your seniors are done painting their filters, the next step will be to have the seniors paint a white styrofoam cup.
Painting the Coffee filters and the styrofoam cup is the only part of the craft activity that the seniors will be working on. You will be drying the coffee filters later, along with ASSEMBLING and GLUING everything together. REMEMBER: Dry your coffee filters on a plastic tray using a hairdyer. You can also dry your filters by hanging them over a make-shift clothesline.
DIRECTIONS:
1. Gather together all your supplies. Then place your coffee filter in the center of a paper plate and spray the coffee filter with a little water until the coffee filter sticks to the plate. Have your seniors paint brightly colored designs onto the filters. Use 3-4 different acrylic colors that blend well together.
2. After the seniors are finished painting their filters remove them from the paper plate and place them onto a plastic tray or plastic dish. When the craft session is finished, dry them with your hairdyer. Try not to get your coffee filters to wet.
3. To dry your coffee filters, set your hairdryer on a low power setting at medium to high heat. Take your hairdryer and place it over the center of the coffee filter about one 1/2 inches above it. Now, rotate your hairdryer around the filter evenly, until your filter is dry.
4. After the filters are completely dry, (3-4 hours if air drying), form them into a flower shape, twisting and crimping the bottom of the flower to form a small knob.
5. Next, one at a time apply hot glue to the twisted knobs at the bottom of the two top filters, then place the knobs inside the center of the filters and firmly press them together until the hot-glue adheres.
6. Now attach the last crimped knob at the bottom of the flower to a large straw. Add some hot-glue to the knob and tightly wrap it around the top of the straw.
7. Next, completely cover the crimped knob where the flower and the straw are joined, with green floral tape. Then, continue to cover the whole straw with green floral tape, wrapping the tape tightly around the straw.
8. Hot glue some long silk leaves onto the bottom sides of the flower's long green stem.
To paint the Styrofoam cup:
Instructions:
1. Have your seniors paint the outside of the cup with a medium peach acrylic paint using straight even brush strokes. Only paint 2 inches down on the upper inside of the cup, and leave the inside bottom of the cup unpainted.
2. When the cup is thoroughly dried, hot glue the long green stem of your flower to the inside of the cup, gluing it to the center bottom of the cup with a big glob of glue. Hold the stem in place until the hot glue has dried.
3. Once the flower's stem is firmly hot-glued in place, wait for the glue to harden and dry, and then have your seniors fill the cup with either brown paper grass or brown tissue paper. This will help to balance your flower.
To make the Corsage Pin:
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Have your seniors make two flowers, and use the second flower to make the corsage pin that is clipped to the side of the styrofoam cup.
2. First, hot glue two round silk leaves onto the back of the flower, and position them on opposite sides of the flower.
3. Next, place some hot glue on the back of the metal hairclip and then adhere it to the back of the flower. After your metal hairclip is glued in place, make sure it will still open and close easily. After the glue has dried, you can clip your corsage pin onto the side of the styrofoam cup, and your Coffee Filter Flower arrangement is complete!
THE SENIORS SHOULD BE ABLE TO PAINT THEIR COFFEE FILTERS AND THEIR STYROFOAM CUPS IN ONE OR TWO CRAFT SESSIONS DEPENDING ON THEIR SPEED AND ABILITY. YOU WILL BE DRYING THE COFFEE FILTERS AT A LATER TIME AND THEN ASSEMBLING AND GLUING EVERYTHING TOGETHER. IN ORDER TO KEEP TRACK OF WHICH FILTER BELONGS TO WHICH SENIOR: PLACE THE DRY COFFEE FILTERS ON A PIECE OF TYPING PAPER AND WRITE EACH SENIOR'S NAME ON THE TYPING PAPER HOLDING THEIR FILTERS.
