COFFEE FILTER WREATH
MATERIALS NEEDED: Paper Plates, coffee filters, Spray bottle filled with
water, Neon acrylic paints, large & small brushes, hot glue gun
& glue sticks, plastic trays or 8" plastic plates, paper punch,
2" wire ribbon for bow, Hair dryer, scissors,
twine to make a clothes-line, thin silver wire & wire cutters.
THE ONLY PART OF THIS ACTIVITY THE SENIORS
WILL BE WORKING ON IS PAINTING THE COFFEE
FILTERS AND THE PAPER PLATE. THEY WILL
HAVE TO PAINT 7 COFFEE FILTERS FOR THEIR
WREATH. DEPENDING ON THEIR SPEED AND
ABILITY, THIS COULD REQUIRE 1-2 SESSIONS.
YOU WILL BE ASSEMBLING AND GLUEING
EVERYTHING TOGETHER LATER. HAVE THE SENIORS
PICK OUT A MATCHING BOW FOR THEIR WREATH.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. First gather all your equipment together,
then fill your paint palette with 4 different
colors of paint that will blend well together.
Next, fill a cup with water to rinse your brushes.
2. Take a paper plate and cut a circle
out in the center of the plate, about
1 1/2 inches from the edge of the plate.
3. Have the seniors paint the circle with
acrylic paint. Once the paint has dried,
use your paper punch and make 8 holes
opposite each other around the plate.
To make the holes big enough, use
three punches to make each hole.
4. The seniors will need to paint 7 coffee
filters to complete their wreath. First,
place your coffee filter in the center of
a paper plate and spray your filter with
enough water to make it stick to the plate.
Next, use the neon acrylic paints to paint
different designs across each filters.
5. Remove your filters from the paper plates
and place them onto a plastic tray or plastic
plate to dry.
6. Then dry your filters with a hairdryer
set at a low power setting on medium to
high heat. When using the hairdryer
hold it in the center of the filter about
one 1/2 inches above the filter and rotate it
around your filter until it is completely dry.
7. Once your filters are dry, form them into a
flower shape and place a thick maker in
the middle pressing it inward while twisting
and crimping the bottom of the filter
to form a small knob.
8. Take the knob at the bottom of each filter
and press it through each of the holes that
encircle your wreath, leaving the top hole
empty to attach the bow.
9. After you place the knob through the hole,
hot glue it to the back of your circle,
holding it securely until it dries.
10. To attach the bow to the top of the wreath,
first, take a thin wire about 12" long, and encircle
your bow with the wire, wrapping it tightly
around the bow and tying it together in the back.
Next, make a loop with the extra wire in the back
and use this loop to hang your wreath.
To attach the bow to the wreath, first thread the loop through the top hole
and then hot glue the back of the bow to the top part of your wreath.
11. For a nice accent, clip your coffee filter
butterfly onto the bow.
